Pride in our military cannot hide the fact our forces have long been underfunded and under\u002Dequipped by Ottawa.

The fact is Canadians are blissfully unaware of how poorly equipped our troops are when they go into service. That we believe Americans will always take care of us is a bad reminder of how we have allowed the Department of Defence budget to become the easiest one to adjust when demands are put on by other, more politically attractive, government departments.

Far beyond the problems of outdated and old-style equipment, however, is the general way that our military is treated by political leaders. When individuals are transferred, for example, their families are moved with them. The military personnel have a doctor on the base, but too often, it is up to the spouse to find a civilian doctor for themselves and their family. It seems like a small inconvenience, but if you are being moved every two or three years, it can be a very serious issue.

No one suggests that Canada should become a military nation, and our role as peacemaker around the world has been well-established over many decades. However, to maintain that role and to “Stand On Guard For Thee’ as we like to sing, it is reasonable to think our military, though small, should be the best equipped, the best trained and the best compensated of any nation.
