Locals complaining about a surge in noise disturbances
UK holidaymakers are being cautioned about a part of Tenerife that's unexpectedly turning into a party zone, much to the dismay of local residents. In the Palm Mar residential area of Arona, situated in the south of the island, locals have been voicing their concerns over escalating noise issues and nightly gatherings known as "botellones".
They fear that their neighbourhood is beginning to mirror Veronicas, the infamous party centre in Playa Las Americas, with disturbances occurring "every night," leaving them feeling compelled to put up with the increased noise levels at this popular European Union vacation spot. Experts alongside residents have alerted British tourists to a significant uptick in night time problems, including street drinking, brawls, and mounting litter, with raucous parties stretching into the early morning hours, much to the chagrin of those living there. Canarian Weekly has reported a "dramatic shift in the neighbourhood," which was initially designed as a residential, non-touristic zone in line with local urban planning guidelines.
Amid escalating tensions and anti-tourist sentiment in destinations such as Tenerife, UK holidaymakers are being encouraged to keep the Canary Islands on their travel agenda. The Canaries, including favourites like Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, are among the most sought-after holiday hotspots in Europe, attracting scores of Brits in search of a sun-drenched retreat, reports Birmingham Live.
However, there's growing concern that without managing the tourist surge to these islands, there could be dire repercussions resulting in a "systemic collapse". Residents have been vocal with their grievances, keen to see measures that will preserve the tranquillity and residential atmosphere of places like Palm Mar.
