AFL cult figure Rhys Mathieson’s days at the Brisbane Lions appeared to be numbered. The fan favourite, affectionately known as ‘The Beast’, did not play a single senior game this season as the Lions powered their way through to the AFL grand final.
Instagram sensation Deven Robertson signs with Lions. The- 25-year-old’s disappointing 2023 followed another lean year in 2022 where he managed just 10 senior games. Despite bringing loads of energy into a game and showing on several occasions that he can that he can be an accomplished AFL player, Mathieson has only managed 72 AFL games since his debut year in 2016. He toiled away in the VFL this year and played in Brisbane’s 30-point preliminary final loss to Werribee.
