Surrounded by 13 acres of nature in the East Gwillimbury area north of Toronto, the goal for the design team was simple, how best to ‘frame’ all the views…
“The owners bought the property about three years and fell in love with It right away. They wanted to ensure that it was situated to take advantage of the rolling hills, trees and nature,” says Patti Wilson, lead designer and principal of design firm Patti Wilson Design. “But we knew it would be a special place to call home.”Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Wilson was brought into the project during the framing period – at a much earlier time than designers usually are brought in–– and that enabled her to consider views, look at the natural light and how to best frame each view. Use of natural materials and finishes can make all the difference, and add to the outdoor look and feel.Wilson framed one of the views by requesting a large window be placed above the bathtub; then using warm wood with fluted detail on the vanity. She chose marble looking porcelain slabs for the shower walls and around the window for low maintenance.
“Mixing in natural elements like the stone cast table lamps and a more rustic wood bedside table keeps everything feeling authentic and understated which I think just adds to the luxurious feeling,” says Wilson. The outdoor patio can be used three seasons and is an extension of the family room. Features Include a bar area, natural stone fireplace and rattan furniture. A wood pile is used to provide atmosphere and stone flooring with large format tiles gives it an outdoor feel.
“The big difference from other projects is that the designer had a lot of input early in the process, giving us an opportunity to look at everything with a fresh set of eyes,” says Wilson.
