Michele O’Neil will tell the National Press Club that Australia need not choose between climate action and jobs.

Australia should have a national energy transition authority to co-ordinate decarbonisation efforts between government, business and the community,In a speech to the National Press Club on Tuesday, Ms O’Neil will restate calls for the creation of the new authority in the May federal budget, describing it as “the missing piece” in the nation’s climate policy suite.

Ms O’Neil said the authority would support employment schemes, education, income replacement and retirement plans. “But for many communities, the adjustment to net zero emissions risks being a disruptive and difficult one.
