Brian Harman wins The Open at Hoylake in dominant fashion
During a week that saw the Open Championship’s usual weather mix of everything, Sunday proved to the soggiest day of them all. There is a theory in golf that the worst conditions provide the best chance to catch a runaway leader.
Those hopes were quickly dashed when Harman bounced back with a birdie at the par-3 sixth hole. His only bogey on the back nine came at the par-3 13th hole, and, once again, he bounced back with a birdie at the 14th. Over his career Harman has had trouble closing on Sundays, but that wasn’t the case this time as he continued to navigate a Royal Liverpool course that demands more strategy and execution than most other courses on the Open rota.
“No thanks, I had an umbrella all day,” Harman, a noted outdoorsman, began. “I got to thank my wife, my family back home, I sure miss them and I can’t wait to get back to them tomorrow. First, I’m going to have me a couple pints out of this here trophy, I believe.
What the season’s last major lacked in drama, it made up for in message. The enduring charm of this major championship is the simple understanding that not everything is meant to be controlled.
