After three defeats, the weakened prime minister may try a last throw of the dice on her EU divorce strategy
For EU officials watching from Brussels, there was one plea: please make up your minds.
In a 2016 referendum, 17.4-million voters, or 51.9%, backed leaving the EU while 16.1-million, or 48.1%, backed staying. But ever since, opponents of Brexit have sought to soften, or even stop, the divorce. The Times newspaper said some senior ministers had warned May that she faces resignations if she agrees to pursue a softer Brexit. Now several MPs say they see only a general election as offering a pathway to a solution, something May, so far, has ruled out.
Asked if he would vote against May’s government in a confidence motion if she were to pursue a customs union with the EU, Baker told the BBC: “I’m hoping not to reach that point.”
