A five-year-old boy, in serious life-threatening condition after being airlifted from the scene to hospital, is the only survivor of the 7 p.m. Sunday collision between a GMC pickup and minivan on Highway 750, about eight kilometres south of Highway 88, said High Prairie RCMP in a Monday news release.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Both occupants of the pickup, a 36-year-old man from Loon Lake and a 30-year-old woman from Slave Lake, were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the minivan, a 65-year-old woman, a 51-year-old woman, and the 11-year-old boy, all residents of Whitefish First Nation, were killed. The five-year-old boy now in hospital is also from Whitefish First Nation.
RCMP continue to investigate, including determining what factor alcohol may have played in the collision. High Prairie is about 368 km northwest of Edmonton while Whitefish Lake First Nation is about 180 km northeast of Edmonton.
