A child has been rushed to hospital in a critical but stable condition after he was reportedly struck by lightning at a beach in NSW. 7NEWS
Emergency services, including police, had rushed to Warilla Beach in Shellharbour, south of Wollongong, after reports a boy had been injured while swimming about 5.20pm.Watch the latest news and stream for free onIt is understood the boy, reportedly aged 10, went into immediate cardiac arrest after the strike and had to be pulled from the water.
The child was treated for chest burns by a critical care medical team and paramedics before being taken via road to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, NSW ambulance said.“I turned around, I saw the kid and the parents, they were crying and holding ,” they said.The child has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.The incident came shortly after officials issued a severe thunderstorm alert for the region, warning of giant hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall.
“A warm and humid environment over eastern parts of the state is favourable for thunderstorm activity during the afternoon and evening,” the Bureau of Meteorology warned just before 5pm. “Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large, possibly giant hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Illawarra district. Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Bulli and Port Kembla.”
