Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen says the nuclear debate is a “distraction”, and backed recent CSIRO analysis against claims it overstates the benefits of solar and wind.

” – saying the paper’s claim the world is moving to nuclear was “odd” given the world added 295 gigawatts of wind and solar last year versus just 1.5 gigawatts of nuclear, and the International Energy Agency predicts “only a small number of units” will start this decade.says the question of why nuclear power isn’t the right solution for Australia deserves a serious answer. Fair enough.

That figure includes “integration costs” such as extra transmission, storage and gas “peaking” capacity to offset renewables “droughts”. Mr Bowen cited a recent statement from AEMO that declared as “wrong” recent media commentary that its Integrated System Plan fails to include transmission and storage costs, in addition to generation costs with providing electricity to consumers.“The finding is clear: renewables are cheaper than nuclear by several multiples,” the minister wrote.
