Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors have been removed from suburban bottle shops in Alice Springs, leaving liquor outlet owners shocked and concerned for public safety.
MP Marion Scrymgour wants the NT government to make changes urgently to protect the community from alcohol-related incidents.
In a media release, Mr Potter said Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors played an important role in Territory communities. Mr Rodda said he had been told police officers would be randomly visiting his two liquor outlets when they were open from Wednesday to Saturday."The police roll up and everyone goes. Then the police go, then everyone comes back."
"Then you get more things stolen because people think they can just take a couple of hundred dollars worth of meat in their pockets," he said.Acting Assistant Commissioner with Northern Territory Police James Grey-Spence said bottle shops would not be permanently staffed while PALIs retrained."We've gone through all the takeaway alcohol licences in regional and remote operations," Mr Grey-Spence said.
However, he said that having PALIs outside bottle shops was an effective alcohol management strategy.
