Bergeron missed Boston’s opening game against Florida.

Boston Bruins coach Jim Montgomery confirmed that Patrice Bergeron will remain out for Game 2 against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday evening. The Bruins entered the first round unsure of whether goaltenders Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman would be cleared, but both ultimately were. Bergeron was not, but the Bruins went on to still win the opening game 3-1.

Bergeron, 37, had 27 goals and 58 points in 78 regular season games as Boston’s captain this year. Bergeron has typically been a solid playoff performer, recording 49 goals and 127 points in 167 games over 13 seasons. A big piece of Boston’s Stanley Cup title in 2010-11, Bergeron’s absence was noticeable in Game 1, but the Bruins still proved to be too much for a Panthers team determined to ride a late-season high.

The Bruins won the President’s Trophy this year as the league’s top team in the regular season. Many wondered if Bergeron would return to the lineup this year with retirement on the mind, but the Quebec native managed to still finish eighth among 35-and-over scorers this season. Fellow Bruins forward Krejci finished one spot behind with 56 points in 70 games after taking a year off to play in his native Czechia.
