The Border Management Authority (BMA) has outlined plans to handle the expected surge in cross-border travel during the Easter long weekend. This includes extended operating hours at key border posts and collaborative efforts with other government departments to enhance resources and improve the traveler experience.
Border officials are implementing special measures to facilitate smoother travel for individuals crossing borders during the Easter weekend. These arrangements, designed to alleviate potential traffic congestion and streamline procedures, were presented by the Border Management Authority (BMA) to the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs on Tuesday.
The Easter long weekend represents a significant period for cross-border movement, considered the second-busiest time of year for the BMA, with estimations of up to 25,000 border crossings per day over a ten-day timeframe. Key locations identified as potential bottlenecks include Lebombo, Beitbridge, Ficksburg, Maseru Bridge, and the OR Tambo and Cape Town international airports. To address the anticipated surge in travelers and mitigate congestion, the BMA has announced extended operational hours at several key border posts during peak travel days. \The BMA has obtained approval for extended operational hours at designated ports of entry throughout the Easter 2026 period. It's important to note that the Minister of Home Affairs maintains the authority to modify or reverse these extended hours as circumstances may necessitate. Specific adjustments include extended operating hours at various border posts. For instance, Kosi Bay will open two hours earlier and close one hour later than usual, operating between 6 AM and 6 PM from March 27th to April 10th. The Jeppes Reef border post, located in northern Eswatini, will maintain its usual opening time of 6 AM but will extend its operating hours by two hours, closing at 10 PM on April 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th, while reverting to regular hours on April 4th. Similarly, the Mananga border post, also in northern Eswatini, will follow the same schedule as Jeppes Reef, offering travelers two extra hours in the evening on the specified dates. Furthermore, travelers accessing Botswana will have two options for 24-hour border crossings on selected days. Kopfontein will maintain its usual hours of 6 AM to 10 PM on all days, except April 2nd and 5th, when it will operate around the clock. Grobler's Bridge border post will operate continuously from 6 AM on April 2nd to 6 AM on April 3rd, closing again at midnight that night. It will reopen at 6 AM on April 4th, closing at midnight, before opening again at 6 AM on April 5th and remaining open until 10 PM on April 6th. For those traveling to Lesotho, five border posts will offer extended operating hours, with most opening at 6 AM and staying open late into the evening. Sani Pass will begin its extended hours as early as March 30th, with Caledonspoort and Monontsa Pass extending their hours until April 6th. Specific hours and dates for individual gates are available. \The BMA's comprehensive Easter operation is scheduled to run from March 31st to April 9th, specifically focusing on the long weekend. BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato highlighted collaborative efforts with various other departments to augment resources and support the initiative. The provincial governments of the Western Cape and Gauteng are contributing an additional 130 immigration officers, while the tourism department is providing 160 tourism safety officers. These partnerships also extend to the Department of Social Development, which will deploy social workers to the various ports of entry through their provincial structures. Additionally, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) is providing essential resources like temporary lighting, ablution facilities, barricades, and water tankers to improve conditions within the ports of entry and transit corridors. The BMA’s measures are aimed to streamline the border crossing process, reduce wait times, and enhance the overall travel experience for those crossing borders during the Easter period. The collaborative approach between the BMA and other government bodies underscores a commitment to efficient border management and ensuring a smooth transition for the high volume of travelers expected during the Easter holidays.
