PETALING JAYA: Bonnie Bunyau Gustin put up a spectacular performance to break his own world record en route to retaining his men's over 72kg title World Para Powerlifting Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Thursday evening (Aug 24).

PETALING JAYA: Bonnie Bunyau Gustin put up a spectacular performance to break his own world record en route to retaining his men's over 72kg title at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Thursday evening .

The 24-year-old lifted 231kg to win the competition, thus improving on his own previous world record of 230kg set during the 11th Fazza Dubai Para Powerlifting World Cup two years ago.His closest challenger from Italy Donato Telesca secured silver with a lift of 202kg.The world championship, which commenced last Wednesday, attracted participation of 610 competitors from 79 countries and will conclude on Aug 30.

Sarawak-born Bonnie won Malaysia's first ever gold medal in the sport in the men's 72 kg event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo.
