If you thought you couldn’t love dogs more than you do now, here’s a tale “of pure, unadulterated, fearsome devotion” by columnist Bob Wakeham which will put that theory to the test.
Bob Wakeham is pictured with Molly and Tibbs, two beagles that spent a cold and lonely night in the woods last February after Molly became trapped in a rabbit snare. - ContributedIf it’s true, as they say, that a picture is worth a thousand words, then the photograph on this page of a certain grizzled hunter and two gorgeous and excited beagles certainly fits the bill, especially if you happen to be a dog lover and/or a sucker for stories of unambiguous loyalty that pull at the heart strings.
But back to this local photograph and story, one that seems appropriate on this particular weekend, the beginning of the rabbit-hunting season - a time of the year that generates a child-like level of excitement for me that’s impossible to quantify. For the next several hours, we shouted ourselves hoarse, bellowing in a windless night that Molly and Tibbs could obviously hear.Ultimately, we realized our efforts to get the dogs to move towards us was futile, that we were better off returning the next morning and using the daylight to walk the estimated two kilometres to where we knew they were.
The search that evening, however, wasn’t over: Around midnight, my wife Heather and I couldn’t resist the urge to take our truck into the woods to see if Molly and Tibbs had made an appearance.Still, the two of us roared their names for a half hour or so, knowing the sounds would travel easily in the clear and quiet night. But there was no satisfaction, just a continuing sense of dread.
Ty rushed to Molly, took out a pair of wire cutters, and released her from the snare, mercifully unharmed, as I rushed down the trail, screaming Tibbs’ name at the top of my lungs.Then, like a scene out of a Walt Disney flick, Tibbs bounded down the trail, and jumped into my arms.Thus, the photograph accompanying today’s piece, the picture worth a thousand words.
