MRI to star shortstop reveals no structural damage

In an update provided by his manager, John Schneider, an MRI taken on Monday night as almost picture perfect for the team in that it avoided most of the worst potential outcomes.“Bo had an MRI that revealed no significant structural damage, just an inflammation,” Schneider said prior to Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. “We’ll know more in the coming days to see what we’re going to do.
Perhaps as a way to compensate for a potential setback, Jays general manager Ross Atkins acquired short stop Paul DeJong from the St. Louis Cardinals prior to Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline..“You kind of hold your breath when a guy like that stops in the middle of the base path,” Schneider said. “But yeah, it was the best outcome. Just happy with the news that we got so far.”
Schneider wouldn’t rule out a trip to the injured list for Bichette though if that were the case it likely wouldn’t be for long.Meanwhile, Schneider was looking forward to seeing DeJong, who was in transit to Toronto on Tuesday afternoon. In the short term, he’ll be expected to play at shortstop until Bichette returns.
“The goal of any team is just to make sure all your bases are covered,” Schneider said. “So if that means without Bo for a little bit – and it may not – today you really lose that option to protect yourself.”
