They are the early days of camp and Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker is in full hustle mode.
And before the morning was done, Walker shuffled over to Field 2 here to catch lefty Yusei Kikuchi facing live hitters for the first time this spring.
Most have been here for well over a week now, but with Tuesday being the first official day of full squad workouts, pace is picking up with the Grapefruit League opener scheduled for this Saturday in Bradenton when the Jays face the Pirates. Every season brings a new look to the pitching staff, especially as the Jays spent the winter zooming in on run prevention as its main drive for improvement. What has Walker enthused is the variety of arms in the rotation thanks to the addition of lanky Chris Bassitt and ideally a better version of Jose Berrios.
Of course, much attention this spring will be focussed on Berrios and the bounce back possibilities from a disappointing 2022. Should the righty turn that around, the depth of the Jays rotation would shoot up immediately.Article content “I think it will be good for him to compete during spring training at a different level, a higher level and that it might just set him up nicely for the season,” Walker said. “Right now, I think it’s going to be really good for him. He’s excited to pitch for Puerto Rico and it will be good for him after battling through that season that he did with the ups and downs.”Article content
