The Blue Jays confirmed Wednesday morning that they have hired Yankees great Don Mattingly to join the team’s staff as bench.
first reported Tuesday night that the team was in talks with the 61-year-old for a job on the coaching staff.Mattingly told the Post podcast “” earlier that he was interested in joining an organization with a chance to win.
Mattingly has never appeared in a World Series as a player, coach or as manager of the Dodgers and Marlins. Mattingly, the Marlins’ all-time leader in managerial wins by a wide margin, was 437-584 in Miami, with one winning season in those seven years — a 31-29 mark in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season when the team made its first playoff appearance since 2003.
He has managed for 12 seasons, the first five with the Los Angeles Dodgers. All five of those Dodgers clubs had winning records, three of them making the playoffs.Mattingly had 2,153 hits, 222 home runs, 1,099 RBI and a .307 average in his career. He is considered by some as the best Yankee to have never played in a World Series.
