In the early cuts of spring training, Danny Jansen has been the power star of the show in the Blue Jays batting cage.

With a little more bump in the biceps, some overall muscular addition to his playing weight and commitment to build off the aggressive approach he favoured at the end of last season, Jansen finds himself in a good place.

Safe to say manager John Schneider and the rest of the Jays coaching staff share that sentiment. Not only is Jansen well regarded for his ability to manage and provide feedback from the pitching staff – almost like an additional coach in that regard – there has always been the sense that unlocked potential exists with a bat in his hand.

Making health and durability a priority is no surprise given the way last season unfolded for the longest-serving Jays player, who made his debut with the club in 2018. Limited to just 72 games after a pair of stints on the injured list, frustration has fuelled him. To help maintain the physical part of the equation and armed with a program sculpted for him by Jays strength and conditioning coach Scott Weberg, Jansen focussed on bolstering his back and core. While he’s put on muscle, he feels lighter on his feet, reporting to camp at a trim but powerful-looking 230 pounds.Article content
