THE Philippine Blu Girls sank under the quagmire of the Venezuelans’ barrage of runs and suffered a stinging 8-5 defeat in Wednesday’s start of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup group stage in Lima, Peru.

Filipina pitchers Royevel Palma, Sydney Lynn Vitangcol and April Mae Minanga couldn’t handle their heavy batting foes and allowed a total of 10 hits that resulted in eight decisive runs. The Cebuena Lhuillier-backed Blu Girls remained in contention though but they would have to finish in the top four of their six-nation Group B to advance to the playoff round.

“We knew coming into this tournament that every game would be a challenge because we are competing against some of the best softball nations in the world,” said ASAPHIL President Jean Henri Lhuillier. “The Blu Girls have always shown resilience in the face of adversity, and I believe they will respond with the determination and fighting spirit that have become their trademark.

We still have everything to play for, and I have full confidence that they can bounce back stronger in the games ahead,” he added. They clash with the Japanese, the defending champions and World No. 1, on Thursday, the Puerto Ricans and the Brits on Friday, and the Peruvians on Saturday.

The Filipinas are hoping to finish in the top two here to claim a seat to next year’s World Cup finals in Australia where the eventual champion books a spot to the 2028 LA Olympics. The Venezuelans peppered Ms. Vitangcol with five hits atop the third inning and when the Nationals responded with three runs of their own at the bottom third, the former unleashed a back-breaking four-run sixth inning to go up at 8-3.

The Blu Girls tried to muster one last desperate fightback but managed just two runs by Mylia Isabel Perez and Skylynne Elllazar on the bottom sixth and couldn’t scrape any in the seventh and final frame. —
