The fire threatening Hay River, N.W.T., has jumped a protective line around part of the town, forcing the evacuation of first responders.

A member of B Company, 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, conducts Type III firefighting operations in the vicinity of Hay River, N.W.T., in support of Operation LENTUS on Aug. 22.

According to a release sent on Friday afternoon, south-southwest winds created weather conditions that caused the "flame front moving parallel to the highway into Hay River."Everyone in Hay River who isn't a member of a fire crew is being told to leave immediately. At 3:55 p.m., the N.W.T. government warned that anyone who stays in Hay River does so at their own risk, adding that "there will be no emergency services or response available."
