TRURO, N.S. — Lynn Gourley is an avid gardener with a fruitful imagination.Having lived in Truro for over 25 years, Gourley’s passion for gardening took to an extreme upon her retirement. The result of her efforts is a colourful playground of vibrant flowers and stand-out décor that has earned her the title of “the gardening lady” amongst her neighbours. She has even had art students come by to paint and draw scenes from her garden.
While her grandchildren played in the mound of dirt, Gourley would slowly begin to cover the entirety of her yard with topsoil. She started with the perimeter, eventually working her way around the property. Gourley said this took about 10 years to complete, all the while she found time to decorate what she had completed so far.
Gourley also takes on most of the physical labour. Though her husband Bill delivers her topsoil nowadays, Gourley is often left to her own devices when it comes to setting up the garden.“I lug all that stuff in, I lug it all out, I’m always doing something,” said Gourley. “But it’s good for you. You’re out in the fresh air. It couldn’t be any better.”
The center piece of Gourley's summer garden is a lady constructed from pots and plant life. Brendyn Creamer While Bill was doing this, Gourley’s daughter and son-in-law awaited in one of the sheds. They had fitted themselves in chains, clanking them around to the dismay of the kids.
