The annual Traslacion procession in Cagayan de Oro City drew significantly fewer participants this year compared to 2023, when it was the only major procession held due to pandemic restrictions.
Thousands of Catholic devotees filled the Saint Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral in the early hours of Thursday, January 9, for Mass ahead of the annual Black Nazarene procession in Cagayan de Oro City. Police estimated this year’s Traslacion drew 13,000 participants – a far cry from the over 100,000 who joined in 2023, when Cagayan de Oro gained prominence as the only city to hold the grand procession amid tight COVID-19 restrictions.
That year, Cagayan de Oro did it the way it was done in pre-pandemic times, reenacting the late 18th-century transfer of the Black Nazarene from Intramuros to Quiapo Church, a tradition interrupted only by strict health protocols. The turnout in 2023 marked a brief resurgence of the devotion, but numbers have since dwindled. The easing of health restrictions and the World Health Organization’s declaration of the end of the pandemic are likely contributing factors. Another factor is decentralization – Cagayan de Oro has ceased to become the only place in Mindanao which stages the annual Traslacion. This year’s procession followed a familiar route, starting at the cathedral to the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus Nazareno on Claro M. Recto Avenue
