The arrival of migratory black-headed gulls in Cadiz City coincides with the city's application for Ramsar site designation for its wetlands.

The arrival of black-headed gulls in Cadiz City this December has brought renewed attention to the city's pursuit of a Ramsar site designation for its wetlands. These migratory birds, known for their striking winter plumage, are typically found in Europe and Asia. They are highly adaptable and have expanded their range, thriving in both urban and rural landscapes. While their numbers are stable, habitat loss and pollution remain threats.

Conservationists note that the presence of black-headed gulls in Cadiz signals a healthy environment capable of supporting diverse bird species. The birds are expected to stay in Cadiz until March. The timing coincides with Cadiz's recent submission of its four-year documentation to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), a step toward achieving Ramsar site status. According to Joseph Caceres, head of Cadiz’s Ecosystem and Environmental Resource Management Division, three primary factors likely attracted the black-headed gulls: biodiversity richness, clean wetlands, and a sustainable food source
