ICYMI: Black educators: Inspiring youth in Cape Breton and Nova Scotia | SaltWire

A picture of Phyllis Arthur which hangs on the wall of mentors at Harbouside Elementary School in Whitney Pier. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — Less than 70 years ago, Black teachers couldn't teach in all classrooms in Nova Scotia.

Arthur was the first Black teacher Phillip Borden had when she was his Grade 4 teacher at the former Jamieson Elementary School. Along with inspiring students in the classroom, Arthur was also dedicated to helping her community and making education more inclusive. The male educator gave her a copy of"The Underground Railroad" to read telling her she should read it because it's about her culture.

The next year, the book was in her classroom again. This time the teacher read it with the class and the experience was much different. This experience is one that motivated her drive in her education career, although Hogan has wanted to be a teacher since she was five; a desire that didn't wane through her many years of school and multiple university degrees.

Through her teen years, Hogan said she had some self-esteem issues which she was fortunate to talk through with her mother and others close to her. Along with teaching at Greenfield, Hogan is also one of the faculty in CBU's bachelor of education program. A student in CBU's bachelor of education program, Bennett was recruited by the university to play on the men's basketball team for the 2019-2020 school year.
