Business says its concerns have been swept aside amid revelations the government will proceed next week with legislation to introduce multi-employer bargaining.

, the government needs the support of independent ACT Senator David Pocock for the contentious parts of the legislation, the ABCC abolition and multi-employer bargaining. He has asked the government waive the ACT’s $100 million public housing debt as a condition of his support, putting ACT Senator and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher in an invidious position.

Andrew Mackellar, chief executive officer of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who met the government last week, said it was “premature” to be finalising legislation because no consensus had been reached.“We would absolutely rue a lie under the prospect of industry-wide action, now would we be comfortable with anything that opened up a new channel for arbitration.”

“Whatever the government puts before Parliament deserves rigorous scrutiny and further consultation as it is too important to be lost in the noise of budget week.“We remain deeply concerned about any unjustified expansion of multi-employer bargaining that risks undermining the important focus on encouraging employers and employees to reach agreements at the workplace level.

“The combination of industry-wide bargaining and the abolition of the ABCC will be a disaster for the Australian economy,” she said.
