Earlier this year, the Government pledged to invest £20 billion in carbon capture and storage But analysis by GreenAllianceUK shows that if this money were redirected to insulate homes, it could save those households £9,000 each 🔴 CapurrodDaniel
The analysis found that putting the money towards home insulation would save around 30 per cent more carbon emissions than CCS.
The Government’s independent advisers see a place for CCS in the UK’s route to net zero and Green Alliance supports the technology. However, Luke Hardy, who conducted the analysis, said this should not be funded on the back of consumers who will not see the direct benefits. “I’m not suggesting necessarily that a levy on consumables is ever the right thing, but if you’re going to ask bill payers to stump up for wider environmental benefits it makes more sense to do that on something where they are then more likely to benefit directly from it,” he toldThe Energy Bill, which is currently before Parliament, contains provisions which will allow ministers to place additional levies on household bills and while ministers have not confirmed their plans, these are expected...
As Chancellor, Rishi Sunak blocked efforts last year to provide an additional £200m a year of funding for an energy efficiency scheme targeted at the poorest households. He also scrapped the £2bn Green Homes Grant in 2021 after just six months after poor uptake from the public. The latest iteration, the Great British Insulation Scheme, has been forecast to take three centuries simply to reach all homes in fuel poverty.
Despite poor rollouts, existing schemes have shown a return on investment of £3.66 for every £1 spent.
