“Farmers have been excluded from the category of persons, and they are furious,” says B.C. Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson
B.C. Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson is urging farmers to get a “cavalcade of John Deeres going down the highway” to protest controversial bill 15, legislation the NDP hopes will help protect agricultural land from speculators and developers.
The proposed amendment stipulates that applications for exclusions can only be submitted to the Agricultural Land Commission by local governments, First Nations governments or the province. Bill 15 also reorganizes the ALC governance by amalgamating what are currently six regional panels into one land commission.
“The law is changing so they are no longer deemed to be persons,” said Wilkinson. “Farmers have been excluded from the category of persons,” said Wilkinson, “and they are furious.” Avtar Mann said the family bought the 22 acre farm five years ago with a plan start farming full-time. They put in 18 acres of blueberries — and a development application for a 7500 square foot home, so he and his wife, his three grown sons and their future wives could all live together. The permits have not yet been approved so the family does not live on the property.
