The Albanese government’s crackdown on consultants, advertising, lawyers and labour hire will start with Defence, Social Services and Treasury.
Defence and Social Services will be forced to cut spending on consultants, advertising, lawyers and labour hire by around $600 million apiece as part of the Albanese government’s crackdown on outsourcing.
“It’s become very clear just how entrenched the use of consultancies and external labour became in the public service under the former Coalition government,” Senator Gallagher toldThe push to slim down outsourcing contracts comes amid concern that reliance on consultants is eroding the public service skills base.
Government use of consultants is facing intense scrutiny with the big four firms being hauled before a Senate committee inquiryAcross the Commonwealth government, department bosses are being told to cut $767.5 million in each of the next three years, and $625 million 2026-27. This comes after $500 million was cut in the financial year just finished.
