HALIFAX—Not many people these days write about the fine art of knowing when to leave. Whether it is politics, sports, or just a great New Year’s Eve party, the moment comes when it’s time to get your coat, thank your hosts, and call a cab. But not knowing when to go is getting to be the rule in public life. Graceful exits are getting as hard to find as presidential candidates who aren’t under investigation or already indicted.
In Trump’s case, of the 62 per cent who thought he was too old for a return engagement at the White House, only 32 per cent of Republicans thought age disqualified him. Biden’s handlers are now faced with an impossible task. They must oh-so-carefully manage Biden’s public appearances to limit potential face-plants at exactly the same time that a skeptical American public will demand that he prove to them that he is vital and vigorous enough to be president. It is a recipe for disaster.
