US President Joe Biden says he "strongly, strongly" disagrees with the US Supreme Court's ruling banning the use of race and ethnicity in university admission decisions. The Supreme Court ruling will force many American colleges to overhaul their admission policiesHe said the ruling walked away from decades of legal precedent and urged colleges not to let Thursday’s ruling “be the last word".
Powered by the conservative justices with the liberals in dissent, the court ruled in favour of a group called Students for Fair Admissions, founded by anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum. Chief Justice John Roberts said that for too long universities have "concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual's identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the colour of their skin. The Supreme Court has a number of Conservatives on it.
In a separate dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson — the court's first black female justice — called the decision "truly a tragedy for us all". Former president Barack Obama said in a statement that affirmative action "allowed generations of students like Michelle and me to prove we belonged".
