BHP has told staff a plan to run the Mt Arthur coal mine past 2026 can’t be guaranteed if the government puts a cap on prices for volumes sold domestically

, and the mining giant signalled that the lifespan of its Mt Arthur coal mine could be shortened by the government’s intervention.

BHP is permitted to extract coal from Mt Arthur until 2026. The company last year said it would seek permission to mine there until 2030 beforeBut BHP vice president of NSW energy coal, Adam Lancey, said on Friday the 2030 plan could not be guaranteed if the government compelled BHP to sell 1.5 million tonnes a year, or about 10 per cent of mine volumes, to domestic customers at no more than $125 a tonne.

Those included in the scheme as a result of the January extension were told to reserve about 10 per cent for domestic customers between April 1 this year and June 30 next year.
