Medal presented to Canadian soldier’s British mother turns up in Australia

Royal Canadian Legion Ortona Branch 69 immediate past president Peter Rigby and Legion member Ruby Lawrence with a Memorial Cross medal. Originally presented to the mother of a Canadian soldier who lived in England, the medal turned up in Cherbourg, Australia. KIRK STARRATTBERWICK, N.S. — Members of the Royal Canadian Legion in Berwick are hoping to solve a mystery surrounding a First World War Memorial Cross medal.

She would prefer to find a family member to receive the medal, but if it ends up going to a war museum, at least everyone would have an opportunity “to see the hero that he was.” The Memorial Cross is in the form of a cross pattee, in silver. At the end of the upright sits a crown, and a maple leaf at the foot and at the end of either arm. In the centre, within a wreath of laurel, is the royal cypher of the reigning monarch, King George VI. On the back, Daly’s name and service number are engraved.

Lawrence said she’d love to know how Daly ended up coming to Canada to enlist and would also love to find a photograph of him to put a face to the story. Daly, service number 73771, of the 28th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry, was killed in action in France on July 18, 1918. He is buried at the Wanquetin Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
