Correctional Service Canada has faced national backlash from experts, critics and politicians of all stripes after deciding that Bernardo would be transferred from a maximum-security prison to a medium-security one in Quebec.
Earlier this week, a former top federal correctional services bureaucrat told The Canadian Press that there are exceptions in the law that allow CSC to explain such decisions, and that it is “unfortunate” the department hasn’t chosen to be “a little more transparent.” “We cannot disclose personal information under our control without consent, except in specific circumstances. Considerations include the sensitivity of the information, the expectations of the individual, and the probability and degree of injury relative to the benefits of the disclosure to the public,” Antonucci said.Article content
“I want people to know that medium security, and in particular, La Macaza, has the same security perimeter as a maximum, and we take every precaution to maintain public safety,” he added.
