Raf Verbraeken and Arthur Van Eeghem two high school friends from Brussels, Belgium, ended what was supposed to be a summer hiking trip in Jasper knee deep in snow on a dangerous 25 km hike back to safety that took them 7.5 hours.
Raf Verbraeken and Arthur Van Eeghem at the Sydney Vallance Hut on the Fryatt Trail in Jasper National Park before the snow became worse.The pair decided it would be best to divert to the Sydney Vallance Hut, a cabin further up, at the top of the headwall, which has a working stove, allowing them to shelter and dry out. But just before the cabin was in sight, snow began to fall.
“We couldn’t stop or else we would begin to freeze immediately,” said Verbraeken, noting their hands became useless in the freezing cold. “We had to walk around because of all the fallen trees; it was deep snow all the way, but we had to continue, the path going down was totally different than the path going up,” said Van Eeghem.“It was like we were walking through the belly of the shadow of death,” surmised Verbraeken.
