On its website, the National Capital Commission suggests not feeding animals as well as avoiding attracting bears with the smell of food. It says people should never approach a bear and to keep a distance of at least 100 metres, or about 330 feet. People should leave any area where they see signs that bears are nearby, which could include scat/droppings, torn-up logs or overturned rocks. For those walking dogs, make sure they’re on a leash at all times.
