Romance scams topped the 2018 list, followed by income tax extortion scams, otherwise known as the CRA scam.
While it used to be that seniors and new immigrants were the main targets of fraud, experts say with social media it is now everyone, including Millennials and Generation Z.
She wants people who are online dating to be very wary of anyone who asks for money, or asks to move money or goods from one place to another. Doug Muir, director of enforcement with the BC Securities Commission, warned people to watch out for the “trust trap.” This is where people get involved with a fraud because the information comes from someone they trust. The trust can also come from friends and family and people in social groups, he said.
“The people you trust may not know they passing on the fraud,” he said. “If you think you have been exposed please contact us.”
