Magnolia's veteran guard Mark Barroca has quietly surpassed PBA legend and current Hotshots team manager Alvin Patrimonio in consecutive games played as the team closed 2024 with a Christmas Day game against Barangay Ginebra.The 38-year-old Barroca , known for being tough as a nail as he has played through aches and pains, played 598 consecutive career games as per PBA head of statistics Fidel Mangonon.The former Far Eastern University standout surpassed Patrimonio on Dec.
20 when Magnolia scored a 99-95 overtime victory against NLEX. Patrimonio, who won four PBA Most Valuable Player awards during his 16-year pro career, played a string of 596 games during his prime.Barroca has always been known for taking good care of his body even during long off season breaks, working on his conditioning and shooting under the guidance of personal trainer Nicolo Chua of Simple Grind.The 5-foot-10 Barroca though has a lot of catching up to do as far as surpassing the all-time record holder.Ginebra's point guard LA Tenorio hold the record with 744 consecutive games played.Still, Barroca, the nine-time PBA All-Star guard has a clear goal in mind, that of leading the Hotshots back to the Finals as the team tries to end their six-year title drought.Magnolia, though, is struggling in its current Commissioner's Cup campaign, having closed 2024 with a heartbreaking 92-95 loss to Barangay Ginebra.Scottie Thompson broke the hearts of the Hotshots after knocking down the game-winning corner triple to seal the Gin Kings' Christmas Day Manila Clasico victory before a jam-packed crowd at the Big Dome.Barroca's Hotshots are currently at seventh place with an anemic 2-5 record.Magnolia returns to action on Jan. 10 where the team faces winless Terrafirma at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium
