I had the pleasure of visiting Hearts Desire and Rideau Glen on two recent weekends. The shock wasn’t the new charge or the cost, but that they were now paying for a service they don’t receive. It was added on the premise that the nearest transit stop is a 15-minute walk away, according to Google Maps. Fiscal responsibility goes both ways. The city must be responsible for its spending, but it must also be responsible for its revenue sources. We are finite sources of revenue, and our property taxes are not blank cheques.Article content

Conversely, revenue source responsibility means you should receive the services you pay for or not be charged for them. Maybe the solution is piloting on-demand services using smaller vehicles in Hearts Desire and Rideau Glen. Maybe it’s removing the charge effective from the 2024 budget .
