THE Philippine banking sector is set to deliver a strong performance in 2025, Maybank Research said on Friday, highlighting its resilience amid a shifting macroeconomic landscape.
'We have a positive view on the banking sector in FY25 as we expect NIMs to remain high and loan growth strong,' the research unit said in a report.Loans are projected to maintain a 12-percent expansion in 2025, mirroring 2024 levels and consistent with historical trends.'Economic growth in the Philippines is quite resilient as it is driven by domestic consumption and less by trade,' Maybank Research said, underscoring the country's advantage amid global uncertainties.
This is expected to mitigate downward pressure on NIMs, potentially resulting in only a 16- to 3-basis-point decline by year-end.A shift toward consumer loans, where household debt-to-GDP remains relatively low, was also seen bolstering yields.'Growing the consumer book is attractive for banks that have successfully strengthened their coverage ratios and enjoy lower NPL ratios,' the report read.
