Thousands of Canadians have weighed in on a CRTC proceeding into banning Fox News from Canadian TV, and most appear to be in favour of ban.
But many of those who opposed a ban expressed concerns about freedom of expression. “Denying access to Fox News because some find it objectionable is a very dangerous step towards government censorship,” one comment said.
In its application, Egale Canada focused on a segment of the Tucker Carlson Tonight show. It said Fox News “coverage aimed to provoke hatred and violence against 2SLGBTQI communities, particularly those who are Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary and gender non-conforming.” “There is a stark contrast between the lack of notice and lack of evidence before the Commission in the instant proceeding and the voluminous record, prior warnings, specific notice, and progressive enforcement measures implemented by the Commission before engaging delisting procedures in the CHOI-FM case,” Fox said.
In its submission to the CRTC, the Canadian Anti-Hate Network said the Carlson segment included “at least four indicia of unlawful hate propaganda targeting the trans community.” But a number of rights groups argued Fox broadcasts other hateful content, and submitted examples for the CRTC’s consideration. The Canadian Women’s Foundation included a list of examples of what it described as misogynist, transphobic, homophobic and racist content from other Fox News hosts.
“From 2020 to 2021, there was a 64 per cent increase in hate-motivated violence targeting 2SLGBTQIA communities in Canada. The rise in anti-2SLGBTQIA hate is also reflected in legislation: in the U.S., over 500 anti-trans bills have been introduced in 2023 alone,” the group said.
