The Christmas season heralds child-like joy among merrymakers. And Ballet Manila ’s founder and director Lisa Macuja Elizalde knows this too well as she always makes sure to add to the festive spirit with shows for families, kids, and the young at heart. This year, the renowned ballerina brings back the magic of beloved fairytale princesses through “ Snow White ” as part of BM’ Holiday Cheer series.
“Snow White” premiered in 2017 while the other shows in the princess trilogy, “Cinderella” and “Sleeping Beauty” had their premieres in 2016 and 2020, respectively. All shows were staged at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City. To make the show even more beguiling for lovers of enchanted tales, artist Sven Wilbur Lim who also goes by the moniker Living Pages, is also exhibiting his sculptures made from paper. His unique medium consists of paper—pages from books, musical sheets, magazines, damaged comics–repurposed into characters and scenes from children’s story books. Delightful and delicate, Lim’s works are all about visual storytelling, which leaves much to one’s playful imagination. The former robotic arm engineer conjures his whimsical images by using wire to put together three-dimensional structural elements. According to the artist, his vision is to create characters that seem to pop out straight from books. On Etsy.com, Lim wrote his artist statement, “I am an application engineer by day and an artist at night. I believe that each of us is given gifts to do things to benefit others. “As a child, I wanted to create three-dimensional figures. When I had some spare me, I tried using wood, but it was difficult to carve. I switched to soap carving, but I found that it broke easily. “Then one day as I browsed the internet, I came across a picture of an octopus made from book pages; the book itself served as the ocean with its pages swirling like waves of water. “From then on I realized that I could create and carve old books into three-dimensional figure
