7NEWS: Indonesian authorities launch task force Bali Becik to crack down on unruly tourists
Karim claimed there was a strong link between low-spending tourists and the amount of trouble they caused.
“The main problem regarding foreigners in Bali is the large number of foreign tourists with low spending who often make trouble,” he said. “Because Bali is included in the category of cheap tourist destinations, so it attracts thin-pocketed tourists.”Those living on the island have been urged to use a new hotline to report foreign nationals witnessed either breaking the law or disrespecting cultural norms.
Indonesia Institute president Robbie Gaspar said the new rules were more targeted at the influx of Russians who have fled Vladimir Putin’s war with Ukraine. Russians have drawn the ire of locals following reports they are setting up illegal businesses and that visitors from the country have been climbing sacred mountains and sacred trees and not respecting the local culture and traditions.Indonesia Institute president Robbie Gaspar said the new task force is not targeted at Australians.Bali Becik will be in place until the end of the year and is among a string of measures introduced by local officials in recent months.
