PETALING JAYA: National women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah crashed out of the Swiss Open after suffering a shock 15-21, 21-14, 16-21 defeat to Taiwan's world No. 26 Lee Chia-hsin-Teng Chun-hsun in the first round in Basel late on Tuesday (March 21).
It was world No. 8 Pearly-Thinaah's second consecutive opening-round loss after also suffering the same fate in the recent All-England championships in Birmingham.
The pair had come second best to Japan's two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara in Birmingham. Meanwhile, in the men's doubles, there was no slip-up from both Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and independent pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi. World No. 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik easily swept aside home pair Arthur Boudier-Pham Minh Quang 21-10, 21-10 while world No. 8 Yew Sin-Ee Yi beat Scotland's Alexander Dunn-Adam Hall 22-20, 21-13.The Japanese pair had stunned the Malaysian shuttlers in the second round of the recent German Open.
Yew Sin-Ee Yi will likely face Indonesia's world No. 20 Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Rambitan for a place in the quarter-finals.
