MARK JAY BACOJO and Cherry Ann Mejia earned spots on the national team after they dominated their respective divisions in the Philippine Sports Commission-National Chess Federation of the Philippines ( PSC-NCFP ) selection championships grand finals at the PACE early this week. Bacojo, a FIDE Master (FM), drew with International Master (IM) Michael Concio Jr. in the 13th and final round as both emerged with similar 9.0 points with Bacojo finishing No. 1 with a higher tiebreak score.
Mejia, on the other hand, was the solo champion in the women’s section after finishing with 7.0 points she capped with a draw with April Joy Claros also in the ninth and last round. Concio, the reigning national juniors champion tipped to become as the country’s next grandmaster (GM), wound up second while another potential GM in the making, Christian Gian Karlo Arca, took third place with 8.0 points. Veteran IM Barlo Nadera and FM Austin Jacob Literatus took fourth and fifth with 8.0 points each, while FM Alekhine Nouri and IM Rolando Nolte ended up sixth and seventh, respectively, with 7.5 points apiece.The top seven in the men’s section claimed seats in the national pool while the top three in the women’s side also made the cut, according to NCFP chief executive officer GM Jayson Gonzales
