According to data from Global Forest Watch, B.C. lost 86,000 square kilometres of tree cover from 2001 to 2021.

She said a focus on short-term profits ahead of sustainable growth has contributed to current mill closures and job losses in the forestry industry.“We haven’t managed for the environment and we haven’t managed for jobs. And as a result we haven’t done either thing very well,” she said. And while tree canopy loss from logging should stabilize, scientists generally agree that the size and frequency of wildfires in the province are only expected to increase as the effect of climate change becomes more pronounced.
