B.C. provides $10 million for new endowment fund for trails, parks, volunteers

Recreational groups are still struggling after funding cuts to the sector from more than two decades ago, said Pedersen.

Environment Minister George Heyman said volunteers are integral to B.C.’s outdoor recreation sector. The grant will give the groups a “reliable and consistent access to grants, to do the work of rehabilitation and maintenance they’re so successful at, and often scrambling to find the resources to do.”Article content

“There is a huge need, at least in the short term, to really invest in the maintenance and ongoing upkeep of what we already have,” Pedersen said. The money could go toward supplies, signs, rehabilitation programs and possibly the hiring of staff, such as a dedicated crew in the summer months to maintain popular and well-used trails. In the future, money could even go toward new projects, such as creating trails.
