Chiu, who championed a strong stance with China for Canada, in 2019 tabled a private-member’s bill proposing a foreign-agents registry to bring transparency to such efforts. And in the 2021 election, Chiu faced social-media campaigns on WeChat and WhatsApp that equated the registry as racist opposition to China itself.
Speaking to reporters Friday, Trudeau said he has long believed that China is trying to interfere in Canada’s democracy, including during elections, but Canadian security and intelligence agencies “have been working very hard over the last number of years” on countering such efforts to make sure Canadian institutions are safe.
Security expert Candyce Kelshall agreed with Trudeau that the outcome of the 2021 election wasn’t compromised.
