B.C. Liberal MLA Elenore Sturko was sworn in on Monday.
B.C. Liberal MLA Elenore Sturko is the first politician in Canada to be sworn in under King Charles III, according to B.C. legislature clerk Kate Ryan-Lloyd.
Although some elected officials have re-affirmed their oaths to the King, Sturko is the first in Canada to make one as a newly elected official. The well-known RCMP spokesperson won almost 52 per cent of the vote in the Surrey South byelection last month. The seat became available when Liberal MLA Stephanie Cadieux stepped down in April to take a position with the federal government as the country’s first chief accessibility officer.
B.C. Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon is expected to introduce Sturko in the house Monday afternoon, the first day of the fall legislative session.
