B.C. can’t force companies to clean up inactive wells, A-G says
British Columbia’s Auditor-General says the province has no ability to force companies to clean up thousands of inactive wells that represent a $3-billion liability to the industry.
“We found that gaps in the provincial legislation governing the OGC meant operators weren’t required to decommission or restore their inactive well sites unless the OGC explicitly ordered them to do so because of specific safety or environmental issues,” she said in the report. The number of inactive oil and gas wells in B.C. soared to 7,474 from 3,800 between 2007 and 2018. Such wells no longer produce oil and gas, but they have yet to be restored to their predrilling state.
